A verb a day keeps Dr Alzheimer away
Learn languages to keep the brain in top form!
Ellen Bialystok, a psychologist at York University in Toronto, has carried out a study which suggests speaking another language can be a factor in keeping ageing disease Alzheimer's at bay.
We are not scientists, but, as linguists and language-learning consultants, we are kept on our toes by using foreign languages and being asked to define words or explain grammatical concepts.
Language is infinitely complex - the fact no reliable translation machine has yet been invented must be the proof of this - so the discipline of learning a language in a way that forces the brain to analyse so-called "deep structure" has to be great mental exercise.
In a nutshell, language learning is gym for the brain.
